Introduction: Ginans with English Translation and Glossary, Volume 9

Ginans with English Translation and Glossary, 2015

Abstract:

For centuries, the Ginans of the Ismaili Pirs were copied out carefully by hand and memorized by members of the jama’at, as this wonderful tradition was passed from one generation to the next. The sonorous melodies and poignant lyrics touched the hearts of those who heard and recited the inspirational verses. This precious heritage is a treasure of spirituality, of guidance on the path to the afterlife, and of direction about human conduct in the time we have on earth. This introduction to the translations of Al-Wa’iz Kamaluddin Ali Muhammad and al-Wa’iza Zarina Kamaluddin explores the literary aspects of the Ginans.
